About The Clark Cultivator

New Upgrade:  420 Stainless Steel Blade. Hardened through Heat treatment HRC-50

The Clark Cultivator is a breakthrough in garden tool design, invented  in Christchurch, New Zealand's Garden City.

Superbly crafted from the finest materials, it is destined to be your favourite garden tool! The unique thumb grip and contoured ultra-comfortable handle allow effortless control of the offset cutting blade when weeding and cultivating the soil. You will be amazed how easily and dextrously you can slice through weeds and cultivate around closely-spaced plants.

The blade will feel like an extension of your hand. Even woody weeds are sliced off with ease, such is the force you can apply with this amazing tool. Innovative, tough and attractive, this tool is a must for any gardener. The design is simple, but simply brilliant!

Construction  ________________

The Blade :
The blade is made from surgical-grade stainless steel.

It is lasercut, milled and bent in the annealed condition, then precipitation heat-treated to maximum strength, hardness and wear-resistance.

After polishing, it is ready for a lifetime of use. The blade will not bend or break no matter how much force is applied during use, yet it can be sharpened from time to time with a file.

The Handle :

The handle is made from 100% recyclable Polycarbonate, a super tough material with outstanding stiffness and impact resistance qualities.

The History  ________________

The idea for the Clark Cultivator came from the goldfields!  Barry Clark the inventor was gold mining as a hobby in the Nelson Goldfields, but was having no luck until an old-time prospector told him that he needed a knife with a blade bent at a right angle so he could forcefully scrape the gold off the bedrock. Acting on his advice Barry put a blowtorch to the blade of a sturdy knife, bent the blade to a 90 degree angle, and found that he began to get more gold.

Then one day, when preparing to do some gardening, he couldn't find his hand trowel so he used the gold-mining knife to weed the garden. It was effective, but because of the torsional effect of the ground, it kept slipping around in his hand as he tried to cultivate and weed the soil. So he glued the spoon end of a teaspoon on the side of the knife handle so he could put his thumb into it to counter the twisting. Suddenly the tool was transformed in its function and ease of use! It became Barry’s favourite gardening implement.

Weeding and cultivating became a breeze, such was the degree of control the thumb-grip gave.

After patenting the idea, he improved the contours of the handle and thumb-grip to make them ultra-comfortable. At the same time he sourced the best steel he could find and developed techniques to craft the blade and combined it with a laminated handle. The handle is now made from Polycarbonate.

Several prototypes and a lot of hard work later the product came to the market.

Sadly Barry passed away in March 2020 but the Cultivator lives on through his son Chris who resides in Christchurch.

Sometimes in bony soil the blade's edge can become dull and get the odd ding.
File in one direction away from the handle on the blades outside edge.
Keeping the blade dry and free from any accumulated soil after each use will avoid surface rust and ensure it performs at its maximum efficiency.

Currently the Cultivator is only available in a right handed version.
